Iconography

Depicted as a giant tortoise, or as Vishnu with the lower half of a tortoise and upper half of a four-armed man holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus. Often shown supporting the Mandara mountain on his back during the Samudra Manthan.

The Story

When the devas (gods) lost their strength due to the curse of Sage Durvasa, Lord Vishnu advised them to churn the cosmic ocean (Kshira Sagara) to obtain amrita (the nectar of immortality). However, the gods could not churn the ocean alone — they had to enlist the help of their enemies, the asuras (demons), promising them a share of the nectar. They used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the churning rope. But as they began to churn, the mountain began to sink into the ocean floor. To prevent this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma (a giant tortoise) and dived to the bottom of the ocean, supporting Mount Mandara on his back. The churning then proceeded, yielding 14 treasures — including the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu, the celestial elephant Airavata, the goddess Lakshmi, the bow Saranga, and finally the pot of amrita. Vishnu then took the form of the enchantress Mohini to distribute the amrita to the gods alone, deceiving the asuras.

Significance

Kurma is the second avatar of Vishnu, embodying the principle of stable foundation and support. Without his steadfastness, the cosmic churning — and the recovery of immortality, prosperity (Lakshmi), and divine treasures — would have been impossible. Kurma teaches that the greatest service is often unseen and unglamorous — being the foundation upon which great things are achieved. The Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) is one of the most important myths in Hinduism, symbolizing the spiritual churning of the mind and the extraction of wisdom from the depths of consciousness.
