Navagraha — The 9 Planets
The Navagraha are the 9 celestial bodies that influence every aspect of life according to Vedic astrology. They are: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Node), and Ketu (South Node). Each planet rules specific signs, has a presiding deity, and represents distinct life energies.
Luminaries (Surya & Chandra)
Surya
Surya is the king of the planetary cabinet and the soul of the cosmic body. He represents consciousness, ego, vitality, father, authority, and self-expression. Surya rides a chariot drawn by seven horses (the seven colors of light and the seven days of the week) and is the source of all life force (prana) in the solar system. The Gayatri Mantra is addressed to Savitr, a form of Surya, and the Aditya Hridayam is recited to invoke his blessings.
Chandra
Chandra is the queen of the planetary cabinet and represents the mind (manas), emotions, mother, memory, and intuition. She rules the sign of Karka (Cancer) and is exalted in Vrishabha (Taurus). Chandra is the most important planet in Vedic astrology because she determines the Janma Nakshatra (birth star), which sets the foundation for the entire chart and the starting point of the Vimshottari Dasha system.
Terrestrial Planets (Mangala to Shani)
Mangala
Mangala is the commander-in-chief of the planetary cabinet, representing energy, courage, action, and aggression. He rules Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio), and is exalted in Makara (Capricorn). Mangala is identified with Kartikeya (Skanda, Murugan), the son of Shiva and Parvati and the commander of the divine army. He is the planet of war, passion, protection, and righteous force.
Budha
Budha is the prince of the planetary cabinet, representing intellect, communication, commerce, and adaptability. He rules Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo), and is exalted in Kanya. Budha is the son of Chandra and Tara, and is described as having a green complexion with a gentle, youthful demeanor. He is the messenger of the gods and the patron of trade, mathematics, and language.
Guru
Guru (Brihaspati) is the most benefic planet in Vedic astrology, representing wisdom, dharma, children, wealth, and grace. He rules Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces), and is exalted in Karka (Cancer). Guru is the preceptor of the gods (Devas) and the embodiment of divine wisdom. He is described as having a golden-yellow complexion, carrying a book and a stick, and riding a chariot drawn by eight horses.
Shukra
Shukra is the most refined and sensual of the planets, representing love, beauty, art, music, and luxury. He rules Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra), and is exalted in Meena (Pisces). Shukra is the preceptor of the Asuras (demons) and the only planet who possesses the knowledge of Mrita Sanjeevani — the mantra that can raise the dead. He is described as having a bright, white complexion, carrying a staff and a lotus, and riding a horse or a crocodile.
Shani
Shani is the most feared and misunderstood planet in Vedic astrology, representing karma, discipline, hard work, and time. He rules Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius), and is exalted in Tula (Libra). Shani is the son of Surya and Chhaya, and is described as dark-complexioned, lame, and riding a crow or an iron chariot. He is the lord of justice, rewarding and punishing according to one's karma.
Shadow Planets (Rahu & Ketu)
Rahu
Rahu is the north lunar node — the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic going north. He is not a physical planet but a calculated point, and is described as having only a head (no body), having drunk the amrita (nectar) of immortality during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). Rahu is the planet of obsession, ambition, foreign things, illusions, and worldly desires. He rules no sign of his own but is exalted in Vrishabha (Taurus) and strong in Mithuna (Gemini) and Kumbha (Aquarius).
Ketu
Ketu is the south lunar node — the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic going south. Like Rahu, Ketu is not a physical planet but a calculated point. He is described as having only a body (no head), representing the detachment of the body from the senses. Ketu is the planet of liberation (moksha), spirituality, past-life karma, and the dissolution of ego. He rules no sign of his own but is exalted in Vrishchika (Scorpio) and strong in Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces).
Understanding the Navagraha
The word Navagraha comes from Sanskrit: nava meaning nine and graha meaning seizer or holder. The grahas are not literally planets in the Western astronomical sense — they are mathematical points and celestial bodies that "seize" or influence human consciousness. The Navagraha include the 7 visible planets (Sun through Saturn) plus the 2 lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu), which are calculated points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic.
In a Vedic birth chart (Kundli), the position of each graha at the moment of birth determines the native's personality, life path, and karmic inheritance. The grahas are ranked by their benefic or malefic nature: Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) are the greatest natural benefics; Saturn (Shani), Mars (Mangala), Sun (Surya), Rahu, and Ketu are natural malefics; Moon (Chandra) and Mercury (Budha) are mutable — benefic when waxing/associated with benefics, malefic when waning/associated with malefics.
The Vimshottari Dasha system assigns each graha a mahadasha (major period) of fixed duration totaling 120 years: Ketu (7), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17). The sequence starts from the Janma Nakshatra (birth star) and unfolds through life. Transits (Gochar) of the grahas over the natal positions trigger events — particularly Sade Sati (Saturn's 7.5-year transit over natal Moon) and Jupiter's annual transits, which are considered major life-shaping periods.
Remedial measures for afflicted grahas include wearing the prescribed gemstone (set in the correct metal and finger), chanting the planet's mantra (typically 108 times daily for 40 days), observing fast on the planet's day, donating items associated with the planet (e.g., black sesame oil for Saturn, red lentils for Mars), and worshipping the presiding deity. These remedies are most effective when prescribed by a qualified astrologer after analyzing the full birth chart.
