The Sun (Surya) is the king of the planets in Vedic astrology, representing the soul, ego, vitality, father, authority, and self-expression. He rules the sign of Leo (Simha) and is exalted in Aries.

In Vedic mythology, Surya is the son of Sage Kashyapa and Aditi. He rides a chariot drawn by seven horses (representing the seven colors of light and the seven days of the week). The Gayatri Mantra is addressed to Savitr, a form of the Sun. Surya is one of the Adityas — the twelve solar deities born to Aditi.
The Sun governs one's vitality, confidence, leadership, and relationship with father figures. A strong Sun in the birth chart gives charisma, ambition, and the ability to inspire others. A weak or afflicted Sun can manifest as low self-esteem, ego conflicts, or difficulties with authority.
Offer water (Arghya) to the Sun at sunrise. Chant the Aditya Hridayam or the Gayatri Mantra 108 times daily. Worship on Sundays. Wear a ruby (Manikya) set in gold on the ring finger, after proper consultation. Perform Surya Namaskara at dawn.
