Mythology

During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the Asura Swarbhanu disguised himself as a Deva and drank some of the Amrita (nectar of immortality). The Sun and Moon informed Lord Vishnu, who severed Swarbhanu's head with his Sudarshana Chakra. But because the Amrita had already reached his throat, both parts became immortal — the head became Rahu and the body became Ketu. Rahu eternally chases the Sun and Moon, swallowing them during eclipses.

Astrological Significance

Rahu governs worldly desires, ambitions, foreign travels, technology, illusions, and the unconventional. He amplifies whatever he touches. A well-placed Rahu can give sudden success, fame, foreign connections, and material gains. An afflicted Rahu causes confusion, addiction, deception, mental unrest, and taboo behavior. Rahu's Mahadasha lasts 18 years.

Remedial Measures (Upaya)

Worship Goddess Durga or Lord Bhairava on Saturdays. Offer blue flowers, mustard oil, and black sesame. Recite the Durga Saptashati or the Rahu Beej Mantra "Om Raam Rahave Namah" 108 times. Wear a hessonite garnet (Gomed) set in silver on the middle finger. Donate black/blue items and serve stray dogs.

Note: Remedial measures in Vedic astrology are spiritual practices, not substitutes for medical or professional advice. Always consult a qualified astrologer before wearing any gemstone.
