Saturn

Saturn (Shani) is the most feared and the most misunderstood planet in Vedic astrology. He represents karma, discipline, justice, longevity, and suffering. He rules Capricorn (Makara) and Aquarius (Kumbha), and is exalted in Libra. Saturn is the slowest-moving visible planet and delivers karmic results over long cycles.

Mythology

Shani is the son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (the shadow wife of Surya). He was born dark-skinned, which led to misunderstandings with his father. Shani is devoted to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. His gaze is said to bring misfortune to those who follow adharma, but he rewards the righteous abundantly. He is the lord of Sade Sati (the 7.5-year Saturn transit over the moon sign).

Astrological Significance

Saturn governs hard work, discipline, patience, longevity, poverty, sorrow, and justice. He delivers the karmic results of past actions — both good and bad. A strong Saturn gives discipline, perseverance, and wisdom through experience. A weak or afflicted Saturn (or during Sade Sati) can cause delays, obstacles, depression, and hardship.

Remedial Measures (Upaya)

Worship Lord Shani on Saturdays. Offer mustard oil, black sesame seeds, and black cloth. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa and Shani Chalisa. Chant "Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah" 108 times. Wear a blue sapphire (Neelam) set in iron or silver on the middle finger — but only after expert consultation, as it can bring rapid changes. Donate black items and food to the poor and elderly.

Note: Remedial measures in Vedic astrology are spiritual practices, not substitutes for medical or professional advice. Always consult a qualified astrologer before wearing any gemstone.
